Entries for the Thrones of Saint Anthony 2024 open this month

This year, registration for the Thrones of Saint Anthony 2024 street exhibition opens earlier, on the 23rd of March, and runs until the 26th of May. On the same day as registration opens, the book Thrones of Saint Anthony 2023, with photographs of the 197 thrones participating in last year’s edition, will be launched at the Museum of Lisbon – Saint Anthony.

Registration can be done in person at the Museum of Lisbon – Saint Anthont (Largo de Santo António da Sé, 22) or online by sending the registration form and the declaration of authorisation to take images to tronosdesantoantonio@egeac.pt. Terms and conditions of participation can be found here.

The street exhibition will take place on the 8th and 9th of June, when the thrones must be on display, and optionally until the end of the month.

Participation is open to everyone: children and adults, individuals and organisations, Lisboners native-born and adopted, religious devotees or fervent non-believers.

This is a Lisbon tradition that dates back over 250 years and which has been maintained all over the city, in shop windows, at the entrance to institutions, in the windows, balconies and doors of houses, on street steps and in other places.

To give free rein to participants’ imaginations, all that is required is to include the figure of Saint Anthony on the throne and to display it in a publicly visible space at the address indicated in the registration form in one of the civil parishes of Lisbon, so that it can be seen and photographed.

The Museum of Lisbon – Saint Anthony has throne structures available for those who want to use it for their creation, which they can then freely decorate with the materials, figures and ornaments of their choice.

In June, a digital exhibition itinerary will be made available on the EGEAC and Museum of Lisbon websites, allowing everyone to visit this street exhibition and appreciate the creativity of Lisboners.
